A motor cycle cylinder consists of ten fins, each 150 mm outside diame...
Calculation of heat dissipation from the cylinder fins by convection:

Given:
Number of fins (n) = 10
Outside diameter of each fin (Do) = 150 mm
Inside diameter of each fin (Di) = 75 mm
Average fin temperature (Tf) = 500 °C
Surrounding air temperature (Ta) = 20 °C
Convective heat transfer coefficient (h) = 6 W/m2K

Surface area of one fin:
A = π(Do + Di) L / 2
Where L is the length of the fin
L = Height of cylinder (Assuming cylinder height is equal to the diameter of the cylinder)
L = 2 x Do
A = π(Do + Di) L / 2
A = π(0.15 + 0.075) x 2 x 0.15 / 2
A = 0.1575 m2

Total surface area of all fins:
Atotal = n x A
Atotal = 10 x 0.1575
Atotal = 1.575 m2

Temperature difference:
ΔT = Tf - Ta
ΔT = 500 - 20
ΔT = 480 °C

Rate of heat dissipation by convection:
Q = h x Atotal x ΔT
Q = 6 x 1.575 x 480
Q = 4536 W
Q = 4.536 kW

Therefore, the rate of heat dissipation from the cylinder fins by convection when the motor cycle is stationary and convective coefficient is 6 W/m2K is 763.2 W (Option D).
