A number of friends decided to go on a picnic and planned to spend Rs....
Given:
Total amount spent on eatables = Rs. 96
Four people did not turn up
The remaining people had to contribute Rs. 4 each extra

Let the number of people who planned to go on the picnic be x.
Then, the amount each person was supposed to contribute initially was 96/x.
Since four people did not turn up, the remaining number of people who actually went on the picnic was (x-4).
Therefore, the amount each person had to contribute after the four people did not turn up was (96/x) + 4.

According to the problem statement,
(96/x) + 4 = 96/(x-4)
Solving this equation, we get
x = 8

Hence, the number of people who actually went on the picnic was 8.
