IUDs (Intra-Uterine Devices) are the most widely accepted method of contraception in India at present. These devices are small T-shaped devices made of plastic or copper that are inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy.
Advantages of IUDs:
- Highly effective: IUDs are more than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.
- Long-lasting: They can last for several years, depending on the type used.
- Reversible: IUDs can be easily removed by a healthcare provider if the person wishes to become pregnant.
- Safe: IUDs are a safe form of contraception for most people, with few side effects.
Disadvantages of IUDs:
- Insertion can be uncomfortable: Some people may experience pain or discomfort during insertion.
- Risk of infection: There is a small risk of infection after insertion, but this can be minimized by following proper hygiene practices.
- Irregular bleeding: Some people may experience irregular bleeding or spotting after insertion, but this usually improves over time.
Despite these disadvantages, IUDs are still the most popular form of contraception in India due to their high effectiveness and long-lasting nature. They are particularly popular among women who have completed their families and are looking for a reliable, long-term form of contraception.

An effective and popular method of contraception is the use of Intra Uterine Devices (IUDs). These devices are inserted by doctors or expert nurses in the uterus through the vagina. These Intra Uterine Devices are presently available as the non-medicated IUDs (e.g., Lippes loop), copper-releasing IUDs (CuT, Cu7, Multiload 375) and the hormone-releasing IUDs (Progestasert, LNG-20). IUDs increase phagocytosis of sperms within the uterus and the Cu ions released suppress sperm motility and the fertilising capacity of sperms. The hormone-releasing IUDs, in addition, make the uterus unsuitable for implantation and the cervix hostile to the sperms. IUDs are ideal contraceptives for the females who want to delay pregnancy and/or space children. It is one of most widely accepted methods of contraception in India.
