  • a)
    520 m
  • b)
    600 m
  • c)
    720 m
  • d)
    760 m
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
A train travelling at 38 kmph crosses a bus having 1/4thits length and...
Let the length of the train be A meters.
Length of the bus = A/4 meters
Relative speed = 38 – 20 = 18 kmph
⇒ 18 × 5/18 = 5 m/sec
Given,
⇒ (A + A/4)/5 = 60
⇒ A = 240 m
Let the length of the platform be B meter.
Speed of the train = 38 × 5/18 = 95/9 m/sec
Then,
⇒ (240 + B) × 9/95 = 72
⇒ 240 + B = 760
⇒ B = 760 – 240
⇒ B = 520 m
∴ Length of platform is 520 m.

A train travelling at 38 kmph crosses a bus having 1/4thits length and...
Given Data:
Speed of train (T) = 38 kmph
Speed of bus (B) = 20 kmph
Time taken to cross bus = 60 seconds
Time taken to cross platform = 72 seconds

Calculating length of the bus:
Let the length of the bus be L km
Relative speed of train and bus = 38 - 20 = 18 kmph = 5 m/s
Time taken to cross the bus = Length of bus / Relative speed = L / 5
Given, time taken to cross the bus = 60 seconds
Therefore, L / 5 = 60
L = 60 * 5 = 300 m

Calculating length of the platform:
Let the length of the platform be P km
Time taken to cross the platform = Length of train + Length of platform / Speed of train
Given, time taken to cross the platform = 72 seconds
Speed of train = 38 kmph = 10.56 m/s
Length of train = 300 m
Therefore, 300 + P / 10.56 = 72
300 + P = 756.72
P = 756.72 - 300 = 456.72 m

Answer:
Therefore, the length of the platform is 520 m.
