Dilution of 0.5M, 20ml H3PO4 solution to obtain 0.1N H3PO4 solution

Given:
- Initial concentration of the H3PO4 solution (C1) = 0.5M
- Initial volume of the H3PO4 solution (V1) = 20ml
- Final concentration of the diluted H3PO4 solution (C2) = 0.1N

Formula:
The formula to calculate the volume of water required for dilution is:

V2 = (C1 * V1) / C2

Calculations:
Substituting the given values in the formula:

V2 = (0.5M * 20ml) / 0.1N

Conversion of units:
Since the concentration is given in moles per liter (M) and the volume is given in milliliters (ml), we need to convert the volume to liters.

V2 = (0.5M * 0.02L) / 0.1N
V2 = 0.01L / 0.1N
V2 = 0.1L

Result:
The volume of water required for dilution is 0.1 liters.

Explanation:
- The given H3PO4 solution has an initial concentration of 0.5M and a volume of 20ml.
- We need to dilute this solution to obtain a final concentration of 0.1N.
- To calculate the volume of water required for dilution, we use the formula V2 = (C1 * V1) / C2, where V2 is the volume of water required, C1 is the initial concentration, V1 is the initial volume, and C2 is the final concentration.
- Substituting the given values, we get V2 = (0.5M * 20ml) / 0.1N.
- Since the concentration is in moles per liter (M) and the volume is in milliliters (ml), we need to convert the volume to liters by dividing it by 1000 (1L = 1000ml).
- After converting the volume to liters, we get V2 = (0.5M * 0.02L) / 0.1N.
- Simplifying the equation, we get V2 = 0.01L / 0.1N = 0.1L.
- Therefore, the volume of water required for dilution is 0.1 liters.

We have a formula relating normality and volume of the solution.
N1V1=N2V2
N1 and V1 are the normality and volume before dilution.
N2 and V2 are the normality and volume after dilution.
Normality (N) = nf × M
n-f is the n-factor and M represents molarity.
For H3PO4, nf = 3

therefore on substituting the values, we get
3×0.5×20 = 0.1×V
V=300ml
Do not confuse V with the volume required for dilution.
Volume required for dilution=300 - 20 = 280 ml
