Glycolysis is the process in which glucose is broken down into pyruvate. It is an anaerobic process that takes place in the cytoplasm of cells. The process involves several intermediate steps and produces ATP, NADH, and pyruvate.

Steps of Glycolysis:

1. Glucose is converted into glucose-6-phosphate by the enzyme hexokinase.
2. Glucose-6-phosphate is converted into fructose-6-phosphate by the enzyme phosphohexose isomerase.
3. Fructose-6-phosphate is converted into 2 molecules of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate by the enzyme aldolase.
4. Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate is oxidized and phosphorylated to form 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate by the enzyme glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase.
5. 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate is converted into 3-phosphoglycerate by the enzyme phosphoglycerate kinase.
6. 3-phosphoglycerate is converted into 2-phosphoglycerate by the enzyme phosphoglycerate mutase.
7. 2-phosphoglycerate is converted into phosphoenolpyruvate by the enzyme enolase.
8. Phosphoenolpyruvate is converted into pyruvate by the enzyme pyruvate kinase.

Overall, glycolysis produces 2 ATP molecules, 2 NADH molecules, and 2 pyruvate molecules. The pyruvate can then enter the Krebs cycle if oxygen is present or be converted into lactate if oxygen is not present.
