Manganese is essential for many plant functions. Some of them are:
  • The    assimilation    of     carbon    dioxide    in     photosynthesis.
  • It    is    involved    in    the    Hill    Reaction    where     water is split during photosynthesis.
  • It     aids     in     the     synthesis     of      chlorophyll     and in nitrate assimilation.
  • Manganese     activates     fat     forming     enzymes.
  • It     functions     in     the     formation     of      riboflavin, ascorbic acid, and carotene.
  • It     functions     in     electron     transport     during photosynthesis.

Manganese is required in the photolysis of water during photosynthesis. During photosynthesis after the water get split after assimilation of carbon dioxide manganese activates fat forming enzymes which function in the formation of riboflavin, ascorbic acid, and carotene which works as electron transport during photosynthesis.
So, the correct answer is 'Photolysis of water during photosynthesis'.

The role of Manganese in Photolysis of Water during Photosynthesis:

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants prepare their food using carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight. During photosynthesis, oxygen is released as a by-product, which is generated by the photolysis of water. The photolysis of water takes place in the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast, and it is an essential step in the electron transport chain of photosynthesis.

Manganese plays a crucial role in this process. It acts as a cofactor for the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II (PSII) in the thylakoid membrane. The OEC is a cluster of four manganese ions, which are bound to a protein complex. During photosynthesis, the OEC absorbs light energy and uses it to split water molecules into oxygen, protons, and electrons.

The manganese ions in the OEC undergo a series of oxidation-reduction reactions, which release oxygen and protons, and produce electrons that flow through the electron transport chain. The protons are used to generate ATP, while the electrons are used to reduce NADP+ to NADPH, which is used in the dark reactions of photosynthesis.

Therefore, without manganese, the photolysis of water cannot take place, and the production of oxygen during photosynthesis will be limited. Hence, manganese is required for the efficient functioning of photosynthesis and the survival of green plants.
