Calculation of pH of 0.1 Molar Solution of Acid HA with Dissociation Constant of 1×10^-5

Step 1: Write the dissociation equation for the acid HA

HA ⇌ H+ + A-

Step 2: Write the expression for the dissociation constant of the acid HA

Ka = [H+][A-]/[HA]

Step 3: Substitute the given values in the expression for Ka

1×10^-5 = [H+][A-]/[0.1]

Step 4: Assume that the concentration of H+ and A- ions formed from dissociation of HA is x

1×10^-5 = x^2/0.1

Step 5: Solve for x

x = √(1×10^-5 × 0.1) = 1×10^-3

Step 6: Calculate the pH of the solution using the concentration of H+ ions

pH = -log[H+]

pH = -log(1×10^-3)

pH = 3

Therefore, the pH of 0.1 molar solution of the acid HA with dissociation constant of 1×10^-5 is 3.
