 0.8x + 4 = 0.4y

 4y – 8x = 40

y – x = 125

solving above two equation

 x = 115;

y = x + 125 = 240

so x +y = 115 + 240 = 355

Solution:

Let x be the smaller number
Then the larger number is (x + 125)

According to the first condition,
80% of x = 40% of (x + 125) - 4

Simplifying the above equation, we get
0.8x = 0.4(x + 125) - 4
0.8x = 0.4x + 46
0.4x = 46
x = 115

So, the smaller number is 115
The larger number is (x + 125) = 240

Therefore, the sum of these two numbers = 115 + 240 = 355

Hence, the correct option is (c) 355.
