Given data:
Total members in the family = 5
Average age of the family at present = 40
Age of the youngest member = 12

To find:
Average age of the family at the time of birth of the youngest member

Solution:
Let X be the average age of the family at the time of birth of the youngest member.

Total age of the family at present = Average age of the family at present × Total members in the family
= 40 × 5
= 200

Total age of the family at the time of birth of the youngest member = Total age of the family at present - Age of the youngest member
= 200 - 12
= 188

Total members in the family at the time of birth of the youngest member = Total members in the family + 1
= 5 + 1
= 6

X = Total age of the family at the time of birth of the youngest member / Total members in the family at the time of birth of the youngest member
= 188 / 6
= 31.33

Therefore, the average age of the family at the time of birth of the youngest member is 31.33 years, which is closest to option D (35).
