Given:
- The average age of a family of 5 members is 20 years.
- The age of the youngest member is 10 years.

To find: What was the average age of the family at the birth of the youngest member?

Solution:
Let the sum of the ages of the family at present be S.
We know that the average age of the family is 20 years. So, we can write:
S/5 = 20
S = 100

Let the sum of the ages of the family at the time of the birth of the youngest member be T.
We know that the age of the youngest member at present is 10 years. So, at the time of the birth of the youngest member, the age of the youngest member was 0 years. Therefore, we can write:
T + 10 = S

Substituting the value of S, we get:
T + 10 = 100
T = 90

So, the sum of the ages of the family at the time of the birth of the youngest member was 90.
Since there were 5 members in the family at that time, the average age of the family at the birth of the youngest member was:
90/5 = 18 years

Therefore, the answer is option (D) 12.50.
