In the following question, a statement of Assertion(A) is given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason(R).
Read the statements carefully, and mark the correct answer.
Assertion(A): Action spectrum of photosynthesis compares well with the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll.
Reason(R): Chlorophyll is the only pigment which can absorb and convert light energy into chemical energy.
  • a)
Both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
  • b)
Both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
  • c)
Assertion is true but reason is false.
  • d)
Both assertion and reason are false.
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

In the following question, a statement of Assertion(A) is given follow...
An absorption spectrum is a measure of the extent to which a given substance absorbs the light of different colours or wavelengths. An action spectrum is the measure of the efficiency of a process induced by light of different wavelengths but of the same intensity or in other words it is the measure of relative rates of photosynthesis at different wavelengths of light. It is actually a plot of the extent of a response (such as photosynthesis) against different wavelengths of light. A comparison of an action spectrum with the absorption spectrum of a pigment indicates whether or not the pigment is involved in the response. For example, the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll a is very similar to the action spectrum of photosynthesis in most plant tissues. Although, light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll as well as by other accessory pigments, only chlorophyll a participates in conversion of light energy to chemical energy.

In the following question, a statement of Assertion(A) is given follow...
Explanation:

Assertion(A): Action spectrum of photosynthesis compares well with the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll.
Reason(R): Chlorophyll is the only pigment which can absorb and convert light energy into chemical energy.

- Comparison of Action Spectrum and Absorption Spectrum:
The action spectrum of photosynthesis represents the efficiency of different wavelengths of light in driving photosynthetic reactions. It shows the rate of photosynthesis at different wavelengths. The absorption spectrum of chlorophyll, on the other hand, shows the wavelengths of light that chlorophyll can absorb.

- Chlorophyll's Role in Photosynthesis:
Chlorophyll is the primary pigment involved in photosynthesis. It absorbs light energy and converts it into chemical energy through the process of photosynthesis. Other pigments like carotenoids may also play a role in absorbing light, but chlorophyll is the main pigment responsible for this process.

- Relation Between Action and Absorption Spectra:
The action spectrum of photosynthesis closely matches the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll because chlorophyll is the main pigment responsible for absorbing light during photosynthesis. This is why the action spectrum of photosynthesis is often used to study the efficiency of different wavelengths of light in driving photosynthetic reactions.

- Conclusion:
Both the assertion and reason are true. While chlorophyll is not the only pigment involved in photosynthesis, it is the primary pigment responsible for absorbing and converting light energy into chemical energy. Therefore, the comparison between the action spectrum of photosynthesis and the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll is valid. However, the reason provided does not fully explain why the action spectrum of photosynthesis compares well with the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll, making option B the correct choice.
