In a cucumber factory, there are equal number of women and children. Women work for 8 h a day and children for 6 h a day. During festival time, the work load goes up by 50%. Let extra hours a day are x.
According to the formula,
(M1D1T1) / W1 = (M2D2T2) / W2
⇒ [1 x 1 x (8 + 6)] / 1 = [1 x 1 x (8 + 8 + x)] / 3/2
⇒ (3/2) x 14 = 16 + x
⇒ 21= 16 + x
∴ x = 21 – 16 = 5

Let the number of women and children be 'x', respectively.

Total work hours during normal days:
= (number of women) * (hours worked by each woman) + (number of children) * (hours worked by each child)
= x * 8 + x * 6
= 14x

Total work hours during festival time:
= 1.5 * total work hours during normal days [as workload increases by 50%]
= 1.5 * 14x
= 21x

But according to government rules, children cannot work for more than 8 hours a day. Therefore, the maximum number of hours that children can work during festival time is 8 hours.

So, the number of extra hours of work put in by women every day during festival time:
= Total work hours during festival time - Total work hours done by children during festival time
= 21x - (8x * 1.5) [as 1.5 times the number of children work extra hours]
= 21x - 12x
= 9x

Therefore, extra hours of work put in by women every day are 9x/ x = 9 hours.

Hence, the correct option is (a) 5.
