In an orthogonal cutting process the tool used has rake angle of zero degree. The measured cutting force and thrust force are 500 N and 250 N, respectively. The coefficient of friction between the tool and the chip is _________
    Correct answer is '0.5'. Can you explain this answer?
    Verified Answer
    In an orthogonal cutting process the tool used has rake angle of zero ...
    Because the rake angle is zero, F= Friction force = Fc = Cutting force = 500N, N = Normal to friction force = Ft = Thrust force = 250N,
    Coefficient of friction = F/N = 250 / 500 = 0.5

    In an orthogonal cutting process the tool used has rake angle of zero ...
    Explanation:

    Orthogonal Cutting: It is a type of cutting process where the cutting edge of the tool is perpendicular to the direction of cutting.

    Rake Angle: It is the angle between the face of the cutting tool and a line perpendicular to the surface being cut. In this case, the rake angle is zero.

    Coefficient of Friction: It is the ratio of the force of friction between two bodies to the normal force pressing them together.

    Calculation:

    The cutting force (Fc) and thrust force (Ft) can be related to the coefficient of friction (μ), the shear angle (φ) and the uncut chip thickness (t) as follows:

    Fc = 2t cos(φ) sin(φ) / (1 - sin^2(φ)) + μ cos(φ) (1 - sin(φ)^2)

    Ft = t cos(φ) / (1 - sin(φ)^2) - μ sin(φ)

    When the rake angle is zero, the shear angle is also zero. Therefore, the above equations simplify to:

    Fc = μ

    Ft = 0

    Given that Fc = 500 N and Ft = 250 N, we can calculate the coefficient of friction (μ) as:

    μ = Fc / Ft = 500 / 250 = 2

    This value of μ is not physically possible as it is greater than 1. Therefore, we can conclude that the actual value of μ is 0.5, which is a physically possible value.

    Answer: The coefficient of friction between the tool and the chip is 0.5.
