Solution:

Given, number of P species at t = 0 is 4N0 and that of Q species is N0. Half-life of P is 1 minute and that of Q is 2 minutes. Initially, there are no nuclei of R present in the sample.

Let's assume that at time t, number of P and Q species left undecayed are Np and Nq respectively. Also, let the number of R species formed at time t be Nr.

Half-life of P is 1 minute. Therefore, after time t, the number of undecayed P species left will be Np = 4N0 × (1/2)t/1 = 4N0/2t

Half-life of Q is 2 minutes. Therefore, after time t, the number of undecayed Q species left will be Nq = N0 × (1/2)t/2 = N0/2t

The number of R species formed at time t will be Nr = (4N0 - Np - Nq)

When the number of P and Q species left undecayed are equal, i.e. Np = Nq,

Nr = (4N0 - Np - Nq) = (4N0 - 2Np) = (4N0 - 2Nq) = 2 × (4N0/2t) = 4N0/2

Therefore, the number of nuclei of R present in the sample would be 9N0/2 at this point.

Hence, the correct option is B.
