Kjeldahl's Method for Nitrogen Estimation in Soil Sample

In the Kjeldahl's method, nitrogen estimation is done by the following steps:

- Digestion: The soil sample is digested with concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in the presence of a catalyst such as copper sulfate (CuSO4). This converts all the nitrogen present in the soil to ammonium sulfate (NH4)2SO4.
- Neutralization: The ammonia (NH3) released during digestion is then distilled out and trapped in a solution of boric acid (H3BO3) to form ammonium borate (NH4)3BO3. The excess acid is then neutralized with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution.
- Titration: The ammonium borate solution is then titrated with standardized hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution to determine the amount of ammonia present in the sample.

Calculation:

Given, 0.75 g of soil sample neutralized 10 mL of 1M H2SO4.

Molar mass of NH3 = 17 g/mol
Molar mass of N = 14 g/mol

The amount of ammonia produced from 0.75 g of soil sample = 10 mL of 1M H2SO4

1 mole of H2SO4 produces 2 moles of NH3

So, the amount of NH3 produced = 2 x 1 x 10/1000 = 0.02 moles

The amount of nitrogen present in the sample = 0.02 x 14 = 0.28 g

The percentage of nitrogen in the soil sample = (0.28/0.75) x 100 = 37.33%

Therefore, the correct answer is option C) 37.33%.
