You should solve it in reverse order when she was left with one dollar. That would be far more easier compared to the methodology of assuming any amount fron the beginning.

A Lady (say L) is a philanthropist. she goes to a restaurant, orders fo...
    Explanation:

    - Let x be the initial amount of money she had.
    - At the restaurant:
    - She paid half the amount = x/2
    - She also paid a dollar as a tip
    - Money left = x/2 - 1
    - At the mall:
    - She paid half the amount left = (x/2 - 1)/2 = x/4 - 1/2
    - She also paid 2 dollars to a beggar
    - Money left = x/4 - 1/2 - 2
    - At the bookstore:
    - She paid half the amount left = (x/4 - 1/2 - 2)/2 = x/8 - 1/4 - 1
    - She also paid 3 dollars to a beggar
    - Money left = x/8 - 1/4 - 1 - 3
    - Given she had only 1 dollar left:
    - x/8 - 1/4 - 1 - 3 = 1
    - x/8 - 5/4 = 1
    - x/8 = 9/4
    - x = 72/4 = 18
Therefore, the initial amount of money she had was 18 dollars.
