Concept: Capacitors in series and parallel

When capacitors are connected in series, the total capacitance is given by:

1/Ctotal = 1/C1 + 1/C2 + 1/C3 + ...

When capacitors are connected in parallel, the total capacitance is given by:

Ctotal = C1 + C2 + C3 + ...

Calculation:

Given that three identical capacitors of capacitance C each are connected in series. Therefore, the total capacitance of the series combination is:

1/Cseries = 1/C + 1/C + 1/C = 3/C

Cseries = C/3

Now, the above combination is connected in parallel with one more identical capacitor of capacitance C. Therefore, the total capacitance of the combination is:

Ctotal = Cseries + C = C/3 + C = 4C/3

Hence, the capacitance of the whole combination is 4/3C.
