A one-dimensional consolidation test is carried out on a standard 19 mm thick clay sample. The oedometer’s deflection gauge indicates a reading of 2.1 mm, just before removal of the load, without allowing any swelling. The void ratio is 0.62 at this stage. The initial void ratio (round off to two decimal places) of the standard specimen is ________.
Correct answer is '0.82'. Can you explain this answer?

    Calculation of Initial Void Ratio:
    - Given thickness of clay sample (h) = 19 mm
    - Deflection gauge reading (d) = 2.1 mm
    - Void ratio at the end of the test (e) = 0.62

    Calculation:
    - Initial thickness of the sample (h0) = h + d = 19 + 2.1 = 21.1 mm
    - Initial volume of the sample (V0) = Area x Initial thickness = Area x 21.1 mm
    - Final volume of the sample (Vf) = V0/(1+e) = V0/(1+0.62)
    - Initial void ratio (e0) = (V0 - Vf) / Vf

    Substitute the values:
    - Vf = V0 / 1.62
    - e0 = (V0 - V0/1.62) / (V0 / 1.62)
    - e0 = (0.62 x V0) / (0.62 x V0)
    - e0 = 0.62
Therefore, the initial void ratio of the standard specimen is 0.62.
