Calculating the position of the centre of mass of the carbon monoxide molecule

Given:

  • Distance between carbon and oxygen atom in carbon monoxide molecule = 1.1 Ao

  • Mass of carbon atom = 12 a.m.u

  • Mass of oxygen atom = 16 a.m.u

Formula:

The position of the centre of mass of a two-particle system can be calculated using the following formula:

r = (m1r1 + m2r2)/(m1 + m2)

where,

  • r = position of centre of mass

  • m1, m2 = masses of the two particles

  • r1, r2 = positions of the two particles

Calculation:

Let the position of carbon atom be (0,0,0) and the position of oxygen atom be (0,0,1.1).

Using the formula above, we can calculate the position of the centre of mass of the carbon monoxide molecule as follows:

r = (m1r1 + m2r2)/(m1 + m2)

r = (12 x 0 + 16 x (0,0,1.1))/(12 + 16)

r = (0,0,0.88)

Therefore, the position of the centre of mass of the carbon monoxide molecule is (0,0,0.88) Ao.

Explanation:

The centre of mass is the point at which the entire mass of an object can be considered to be concentrated. In a two-particle system, the centre of mass is the point at which the two particles balance each other out. The position of the centre of mass is influenced by the masses of the two particles and their positions relative to each other. In this case, the carbon atom and the oxygen atom in the carbon monoxide molecule have different masses and are positioned a certain distance apart. By using the formula for calculating the position of the centre of mass, we can find the point at which the carbon monoxide molecule balances out.
