Basic strength of hydroxides in Lanthanide series

Introduction:
The Lanthanide series consists of 14 elements from cerium (Ce) to lutetium (Lu). These elements are also known as rare earth elements.

Explanation:
The basic strength of hydroxides in the Lanthanide series decreases as we move from Ce to Lu. This is due to the increase in the size of the cations as we move from Ce to Lu.

As the size of the cation increases, the polarizing power of the cation decreases. This means that the cation is less able to distort the electron cloud of the hydroxide ion. As a result, the strength of the OH bond in the hydroxide ion increases, making it less basic.

In addition to this, the solubility of the hydroxides in water also decreases as we move from Ce to Lu. This is because the size of the cation increases, making it more difficult for the hydroxide ion to dissolve in water.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, the basic strength of hydroxides in the Lanthanide series decreases as we move from Ce to Lu. This is due to the increase in the size of the cations and the decrease in the polarizing power of the cation.
