Given:

  • Radius of first sphere, r1 = 10 cm

  • Radius of second sphere, r2 = 15 cm

  • Potential of first sphere, V1 = 150V

  • Potential of second sphere, V2 = 100V

To find: Charge on the first sphere

Concept: When two charged spheres are connected by a metallic wire, they share their charges and come to a common potential. The final potential of the spheres will be the average of their initial potentials. The charge on each sphere can be calculated using the formula: Q = 4πεrV, where ε is the permittivity of free space, r is the radius of the sphere, and V is the potential of the sphere.

Calculation:

  • Final potential of the two spheres, Vf = (V1 + V2)/2 = (150V + 100V)/2 = 125V

  • Charge on the first sphere, Q1 = 4πεr1Vf = 4π(8.85 x 10^-12 F/m)(0.1m)(125V) = 1.39 x 10^-7 C

Answer: The charge on the first sphere is 1.39 x 10^-7 C.
