Colour Change in Copper Powder when Heated in the Presence of Oxygen

When copper powder is strongly heated in the presence of oxygen, it undergoes an oxidation reaction, resulting in a change in its colour. The following are the reasons for the colour change:

  • Oxidation: Copper reacts with oxygen to form copper oxide, which is a black or brown solid. As a result, the colour of copper powder changes from its original reddish-brown to black or brown.

  • Formation of Copper Oxide: When copper powder is heated in the presence of oxygen, it reacts with oxygen to form copper oxide, which is a black or brown solid. The formation of copper oxide is an exothermic reaction, and heat is released in the process.

Colour Change in Copper Sulphate Solution when Zinc is Dropped

When a piece of zinc is dropped in copper sulphate solution, the colour of the solution changes. The following are the reasons for the colour change:

  • Reduction: Zinc is more reactive than copper, so when it is dropped in copper sulphate solution, it displaces copper and forms zinc sulphate. This is a reduction reaction, and the copper ions in the solution get reduced to copper metal, which has a reddish-brown colour.

  • Formation of Copper Metal: When zinc is dropped in copper sulphate solution, it reacts with copper ions to form copper metal. The copper metal is seen as a reddish-brown solid at the bottom of the container, which gives the solution its characteristic colour.

In conclusion, both the colour changes in copper powder and copper sulphate solution are due to chemical reactions. The colour change in copper powder is due to oxidation, while the colour change in copper sulphate solution is due to reduction and the formation of copper metal.

Read the given passage and answer the question :A sample of water which gives lather with soap with difficulty is known as hard water, while a sample of water which gives lather with soap easily is known as soft water. Hardness of water is due to the presence of bicarbonates, sulphates and chlorides of calcium and magnesium. Hardness of water is of two types, temporary and permanent hardness. When hardness of water is due to the presence of bicarbonates of magnesium and calcium, it is called temporary hardness. When hardness of water is due to the presence of sulphates and chlorides of magnesium and calcium, it is called permanent hardness. The amount of hardness causing substances in a certain volume of water measures the extent of hardness or degree of hardness. Hardness of water is always calculated in terms of calcium carbonate although it is never responsible for causing hardness of water because of its insoluble nature. The reason for choosing calcium carbonate as the standard for calculating hardness of water is the ease in calculation as its molecular weight is exactly 100. Degree of hardness is usually expressed as parts per million (ppm).Q. “A student requires hard water for an experiment in his laboratory which is not available in the neighbouring area. In the laboratory there are some salts, which when dissolved in distilled water can convert it into hard water. Select from the following groups of salts, a group, and each salt of which when dissolved in distilled water will make it hard.”
