Discontinuous synthesis of DNA occurs in one strand because
  • a)
DNA molecule being synthesised is very long
  • b)
DNA dependent DNA polymerase catalyses polymerisation only is one direction (5' → 3')
  • c)
    It is more efficient process
  • d)
DNA ligase has to have a role
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

Synthesis of DNA is semi-conservative and semi-discontinuous.
Polymerization occurs in both the 2 strands of DNA which are of
1)3'→5'
2)5'→3'
The DNA dependent DNA polymerase catalyses the polymerization in only one direction ie.,5'→3' .
so the polymerization of the DNA strand with 3'→5' will be continuous and the DNA strand with 5'→3' will be discontinuous, later joined by the action of DNA ligase .(remember the DNA strands are of palindromic arrangement)
