Merits of Mendeleev's periodic table :-

* Elements were groupedon more fundamental basis.
* Because of their placement in the periodic table, properties
of several elements yet to be discovered like Scandium,
Gallium, and Germanium could be predicted.
Example:- Scandium was predicted as Eka Boron.
Gallium was predicted as Eka Aluminum.
Germanium was predicted as Eka Silicon.
* Gaps for 40 new elements were kept.
* The discovery of new elements inert gasesdid not disturbed
the arrangement and they found their place as a new group.

Demerits of Mendeleev's periodic table :-

* He placed an element with slightly greater atomic mass
before the element with lower atomic mass.
Example:
a) Fe --- 55.85
b) Co --- 58.93
c) Ni --- 58.71

* No fixed position could be given to Hydrogen in periodic
table (Placed in both 1st and 7th group. It's properties
resemble with both alkali metals and halogens because it
can loose one (e–) like alkali and gain 1e– like halogens).
* Isotopes of various elements cannot be filled into
Mendeleev's table (Isotopes are the elements having
similar chemical properties but different atomic mass).
* Chemically dissimilar elements are placed together in
same group with alkali metals (Ex:- Cu, Ag, Au).
* Mercury, Lead and Barium (Hg, Pb, Ba) which possess
similar properties fall into different group.
