Animal Tissue: Structural Organisation in Animals

Animal tissues are groups of cells that have a similar structure and function. There are four main types of animal tissues: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous. Each type of tissue is made up of specialized cells that work together to perform a specific function in the body.

Epithelial Tissue

Epithelial tissue is composed of tightly packed cells that form a protective barrier on the surface of the body or line the internal organs. It can be classified into two types: simple and stratified. Simple epithelial tissue consists of a single layer of cells, while stratified epithelial tissue has multiple layers.

Connective Tissue

Connective tissue provides support and connects different parts of the body. It includes bone, cartilage, blood, and adipose tissue. Connective tissue also contains cells called fibroblasts that secrete fibers and extracellular matrix.

Muscular Tissue

Muscular tissue is responsible for movement and is composed of cells called muscle fibers. There are three types of muscular tissue: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac. Skeletal muscle is attached to bones and is responsible for voluntary movement, while smooth muscle is found in the walls of internal organs and is responsible for involuntary movement. Cardiac muscle makes up the walls of the heart and is responsible for pumping blood.

Nervous Tissue

Nervous tissue is composed of specialized cells called neurons that transmit electrical signals throughout the body. It also contains supporting cells called glia that provide structural support and aid in the function of neurons.
