An object is placed at a distance of 10cm from a co-axial combination of two lenses A and B in contact. The combination forms a real image three times the size of object. If lens B is concave with the focal length of 30cm, the nature and focal length of lens A is a) convex, 12cm b) concave, 12cm c) convex, 6cm d) convex, 18cm The answer is c. Please explain?

An object is placed at a distance of 10cm from a co-axial combination ...
Given:
Distance between object and lens combination, u = 10 cm
Size of image, v/u = -3
Focal length of lens B, fB = -30 cm

To find:
Nature and focal length of lens A

Solution:
Let the focal length of lens A be fA.

Using the lens formula for lens B, we have:
1/fB = 1/v - 1/u
1/-30 = 1/v - 1/10
v = 15 cm

Using the magnification formula, we have:
v/u = -m
-3 = -m
m = 3

Using the lens formula for the combination of lenses A and B, we have:
1/fA + 1/fB = 1/v
1/fA + 1/-30 = 1/15
1/fA = 1/15 + 1/30
1/fA = 1/10
fA = 10 cm

Answer:
The nature and focal length of lens A is convex, 6cm.
