Compare the reactivity of metals A) In reaction with air B) In reaction with water C) in reaction with acids (consider only the metals given in chapter)?
Most Upvoted Answer
Compare the reactivity of metals A) In reaction with air B) In reactio...
Metals reaction with air :-

Metals reacts with air to form metal oxides.
Metal + Air (Oxygen) ––> Metal oxides

Examples :
(i) 2Cu + O2 ––> 2CuO (Copper Oxide)
(ii) 4Al + 3O2 ––> 2Al2O3 (Aluminium Oxide)

Metal oxides are generally basic in nature.

Metals with water :-

Metals reacts with water to form metal oxide and liberates Hydrogen gas.
Metal + H2O ––> Metal oxide + H2↑

Some metals react violently with water release temperature so it is "Exothermic Reaction". So Hydrogen catches fire.

Examples :
(i) 2Na + 2H2O ––> 2NaOH + H2↑
(ii) 2K + H2O ––> 2KOH + H2↑
Here, Potassium is more reactive than Sodium.

Some metals react with cold / hot water.
(i) Ca + 2H2O ––> Ca (OH) + H2↑
(ii) Mg + 2H2O ––> Mg (OH) + H2↑
Here, Magnesium is more reactive than Calcium.

Metals with acids :-

Metals reacts with acids to form salts and liberates Hydrogen gas.

Metals + Acids ––> Metal salts + Hydrogen gas↑

Examples :
(i) Mg + 2HCl ––> MgCl2 + H2↑
(ii) 2Al + 6HCl ––> 2AlCl3 + H2↑(Reactivity decreases)
(iii) Zn + 2HCl ––> ZnCl2 + H2↑
(iv) Fe + 2HCl ––> FeCl2 + H2↑

Mg > Al > Zn > Fe.

Here, Mg (Magnesium) is more reactive and Fe (Iron) is less reactive.
