With reference to electoral constituencies in India, consider the foll...
• Statement 1 is not correct: The representatives of states in the Lok Sabha are directly elected by the people from the territorial constituencies in the states. Each state is divided into territorial constituencies in such a manner that the ratio between the population of each constituency and the number of seats allotted to it is the same throughout the state. Therefore, boundaries of the Lok Sabha constituencies are not the same as district boundaries.
• Statement 2 is not correct: After every census, a readjustment is made in (a) allocation of seats in the Lok Sabha to the states, and (b) division of each state into territorial constituencies. Since the number of Lok Sabha seats alocated to each state is lesser than the number of assembly seats/constituencies, there may be many assembly constituencies in one Lok sabha constituency. For example, there are 80 parliamentary constituencies and 403 legislative assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh.
