By adding a small amount of acid, the reaction of water with the electrodes is prevented. This is because the acid provides an alternative source of ions for the reaction, preventing the water from reacting with the electrodes.

To promote the selective discharge of ions: During the electrolysis of water, both hydrogen and hydroxide ions are formed at the cathode. However, hydrogen ions are more easily discharged than hydroxide ions. By adding a small amount of acid, the concentration of hydrogen ions is increased, making them more likely to be discharged at the cathode. This results in a higher yield of hydrogen gas.
