During prophase, chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes and the nuclear envelope breaks down. In metaphase, the chromosomes line up along the middle of the cell. In anaphase, the sister chromatids separate and move towards opposite poles of the cell. Finally, in telophase, the nuclear envelope reforms around each set of chromosomes, and the cell divides into two daughter cells.
The cell cycle is tightly regulated by a variety of checkpoints and regulatory proteins to ensure that cells divide accurately and only when necessary. Mutations or errors in these processes can lead to diseases such as cancer.
