- A chemical synapse is a type of synapse in which the transmission of information between neurons occurs via the release of chemical neurotransmitters.
- At a chemical synapse, the presynaptic neuron releases neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, which then bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron.
- This binding causes a change in the electrical potential of the postsynaptic neuron, either depolarizing or hyperpolarizing it.
- The change in the electrical potential of the postsynaptic neuron can either facilitate or inhibit the generation of an action potential, depending on the type of neurotransmitter and the receptors involved.
- Chemical synapses are slower than electrical synapses, but they allow for more complex information processing and modulation.
