Process of Lactate Fermentation

Lactate fermentation is a type of anaerobic respiration where glucose is converted to lactate. This process occurs in the absence of oxygen.

Glucose → 2 Pyruvate → 2 Lactate + 2 ATP

Explanation

During lactate fermentation, glucose is broken down into two pyruvate molecules through a process called glycolysis. This process takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell and does not require oxygen. The pyruvate is then converted into lactate by the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase. This process also produces two molecules of ATP.

In lactate fermentation, CO2 is not released as it is not a part of the reaction. The only byproduct of this process is lactate.

Importance

Lactate fermentation is an important process for many organisms. It is used by bacteria, fungi, and some animal cells to generate ATP when oxygen is not available. This process is also important in the production of certain foods, such as yogurt and cheese. Additionally, lactate fermentation is responsible for the burning sensation in muscles during intense exercise, as the buildup of lactate causes muscle fatigue.

Pyruvic acid and lactate both are 3 carbon compounds. so pyruvic acid do not undergoes decarboxylation. but in case of alcoholic fermentation, ethanol is 2 carbon compound. so decarboxylation takes place which results in the release CO2
