A normally consolidated clay layer settles by 25 mm when the effective stress is increased from 15 to 30 kPa. If the effective stress is later increased further from 30 kPa to 60 kPa, then the additional settlement would be
  • a)
    50 mm
  • b)
    25 mm
  • c)
    75 mm
  • d)
    100 mm
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

A normally consolidated clay layer settles by 25 mm when the effective...
Calculation of Additional Settlement:

Given:
Initial settlement when effective stress increases from 15 kPa to 30 kPa = 25 mm

Calculation:
- Let's assume the settlement due to increase in effective stress from 30 kPa to 60 kPa is 'x' mm.
- According to the formula for settlement in clay, settlement is directly proportional to the increase in effective stress.
- So, settlement is proportional to the increase in effective stress from 30 to 60 kPa as well.
- Therefore, the additional settlement when the effective stress is increased from 30 kPa to 60 kPa would be half of the initial settlement (25 mm).
- Hence, the additional settlement would be 25 mm / 2 = 12.5 mm or 25 mm (option B).
Therefore, the correct answer is option B) 25 mm.
