Are Plants and Animals pH Sensitive?

Introduction: pH is a measure of the acidity/basicity of a solution. It is an important parameter that affects the growth and development of living organisms. Plants and animals are the two major types of living organisms that are pH sensitive.

Plants:

  • Plants are highly sensitive to pH levels in the soil. The optimal pH range for most plants is between 6.0 and 7.5.

  • If the soil pH is too high or too low, it can affect the availability of nutrients to plants. For example, if the soil pH is too low, the availability of essential nutrients such as phosphorus, potassium, and calcium decreases, leading to stunted growth and poor yields.

  • On the other hand, if the soil pH is too high, the availability of micronutrients such as iron, manganese, and zinc decreases, leading to yellowing of leaves and poor growth.

  • Some plants are more sensitive to pH levels than others. For example, blueberries require an acidic soil with a pH range between 4.0 and 5.0, while spinach prefers a slightly alkaline soil with a pH range between 6.5 and 7.5.

Animals:

  • Animals are also pH sensitive, but in a different way than plants. The pH levels in the blood and other bodily fluids of animals need to be maintained within a narrow range for optimal health and survival.

  • The normal pH range for blood in humans is between 7.35 and 7.45. If the pH levels in the blood go outside this range, it can lead to serious health problems such as acidosis or alkalosis.

  • Acidosis occurs when the pH of the blood drops below 7.35, leading to symptoms such as confusion, lethargy, and coma. Alkalosis occurs when the pH of the blood rises above 7.45, leading to symptoms such as muscle twitching, nausea, and dizziness.

  • Animals have various mechanisms to maintain the pH of their bodily fluids within the normal range. For example, they have buffer systems that can absorb excess acids or bases, and they can regulate their breathing and renal function to eliminate excess acids or bases from the body.

Conclusion: In conclusion, both plants and animals are pH sensitive, but in different ways. Plants require a specific pH range in the soil for optimal growth and nutrient uptake, while animals require a specific pH range in their bodily fluids for optimal health and survival.
