MITOSIS VS MEIOSIS

Definition:

Mitosis: It is a type of cell division that occurs in somatic cells of the body, where a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells.

Meiosis: It is a type of cell division that occurs in reproductive cells, which results in the formation of four genetically diverse daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes than the parent cell.

Process:

Mitosis: It consists of one round of cell division, where the cell undergoes prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase, resulting in two identical daughter cells.

Meiosis: It consists of two rounds of cell division, where the cell undergoes prophase I, metaphase I, anaphase I, telophase I, prophase II, metaphase II, anaphase II, and telophase II, resulting in four genetically diverse daughter cells.

Chromosome Number:

Mitosis: The chromosome number remains the same in both parent and daughter cells.

Meiosis: The chromosome number is halved in daughter cells as compared to parent cells.
