Calculation of Permanent Hardness of Water Sample

Given Data:
Volume of water sample = 100 ml
Volume of N/10 HCl required = 20 ml
Volume of N/10 Na2CO3 required = 50 ml
Permanent hardness of water with respect to CaCO3 = ?

Step 1: Calculation of Total Hardness
Total hardness of water is the sum of temporary and permanent hardness. As the water sample is titrated with HCl, temporary hardness is absent.

Total hardness = Permanent hardness

Step 2: Calculation of Number of Grams of CaCO3 in 1 ml of N/10 HCl
One mole of HCl reacts with one mole of CaCO3 to form one mole of CO2 and one mole of CaCl2.
HCl + CaCO3 → CaCl2 + CO2 + H2O
1 mole of HCl reacts with 1 mole of CaCO3 = 100 g of HCl reacts with 100 g of CaCO3.
1 mole of N/10 HCl = 0.1 mole of HCl
0.1 mole of HCl reacts with 0.1 mole of CaCO3 = 10 g of HCl reacts with 10 g of CaCO3
10 g of CaCO3 in 1000 ml of N/10 HCl = 0.01 g of CaCO3 in 1 ml of N/10 HCl

Step 3: Calculation of Number of Grams of CaCO3 in Water Sample
Volume of water sample = 100 ml
Volume of N/10 HCl required = 20 ml
Number of moles of HCl used = (20/1000) x (1/10) = 0.002 moles
Number of moles of CaCO3 = Number of moles of HCl used
Weight of CaCO3 = Number of moles of CaCO3 x Molar mass of CaCO3
Molar mass of CaCO3 = 40 + 12 + (3x16) = 100 g/mol
Weight of CaCO3 = 0.002 x 100 = 0.2 g

Step 4: Calculation of Permanent Hardness in terms of ppm
Permanent hardness of water sample with respect to CaCO3 = (Weight of CaCO3 in water sample / Volume of water sample) x 106
Permanent hardness of water sample with respect to CaCO3 = (0.2/100) x 106 = 2000 ppm
As the water sample is titrated with Na2CO3 for complete precipitation, the calculated hardness is temporary hardness. Thus, the permanent hardness is calculated to be:
Permanent hardness of water sample with respect to CaCO3 = Total hardness - Temporary hardness
Permanent hardness of water sample with respect to CaCO3 = 2000 - 500
Permanent hardness of water sample with respect to CaCO3 = 1500 ppm

Therefore, the permanent hardness of water sample with respect to CaCO3 is calculated to be 1500 ppm.
