Bcoz formation of proton gradient across thylakoid membrane. it is chemiosmotic hypothesis.protons means hydrogen ions enter inside lumen of thylakoid membrane along with electrons.but these protons can be only transfer outside lumen through special membrane protein C1-C0 . this process creates gradient across the membrane and it releases high amount of energy which is stored in form of ATP.
