Which of the following is not a purpose of transpiration?a)Helps in ab...
The correct answer is option B: Transpiration does not prevent the loss of water.

Explanation:
Transpiration is the process by which plants lose water vapor through small openings called stomata present on the surface of leaves and stems. It plays several important roles in plants, but preventing the loss of water is not one of them.

Here are the purposes of transpiration:

a) Helps in absorption and transport in plants:
Transpiration creates a pulling force, known as the transpirational pull, which helps in the absorption and transport of water and minerals from the roots to the aerial parts of the plant. As water evaporates from the leaf surface, it creates a negative pressure or tension within the xylem vessels, which pulls water up through the plant.

c) Supplies water for photosynthesis:
Transpiration supplies water to the leaf cells, enabling them to carry out photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, plants use water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight to produce glucose and oxygen. Water is an essential component for this process, and transpiration ensures a continuous supply of water to the leaves.

d) Maintains shape and structure of plants by keeping the cell turgid:
Transpiration helps in maintaining the shape and structure of plants by keeping the cells turgid. When water is lost through transpiration, it creates a negative pressure in the cell, which causes water to move into the cell from adjacent cells or the xylem. This influx of water maintains the turgidity of the plant cells, which provides support and structure to the plant.

e) Cools leaf surfaces:
Transpiration also helps in cooling the leaf surfaces. As water evaporates from the leaf surface, it absorbs heat energy, which cools down the leaf. This cooling effect is similar to how sweating cools down our body. Transpiration helps in regulating the temperature of the plant and prevents overheating.

In conclusion, transpiration serves several purposes in plants, including absorption and transport, supplying water for photosynthesis, maintaining shape and structure, and cooling leaf surfaces. However, preventing the loss of water is not one of its purposes.
