Covalent Character of MnO, MnO2, and Mn2O7

Manganese oxide (MnO), manganese dioxide (MnO2), and manganese heptoxide (Mn2O7) are oxides of manganese. The covalent character of these oxides depends on the difference in electronegativity between manganese and oxygen atoms. The higher the difference in electronegativity, the more ionic the bond becomes.

MnO:
- Manganese has an oxidation state of +2 and oxygen has an oxidation state of -2 in MnO.
- The electronegativity difference between Mn and O is 1.55.
- MnO has the least covalent character among the three oxides.

MnO2:
- Manganese has an oxidation state of +4 and oxygen has an oxidation state of -2 in MnO2.
- The electronegativity difference between Mn and O is 1.33.
- MnO2 has a higher covalent character than MnO.

Mn2O7:
- Manganese has an oxidation state of +7 and oxygen has an oxidation state of -2 in Mn2O7.
- The electronegativity difference between Mn and O is 1.17.
- Mn2O7 has the highest covalent character among the three oxides.

Acidic Strength Order

The acidic strength of these oxides depends on the ease with which they donate protons (H+ ions) to water molecules. The acidic character of oxides is related to the oxidation state of the central metal atom. The higher the oxidation state, the more acidic the oxide becomes.

MnO:
- Manganese oxide (MnO) is a basic oxide and does not exhibit any acidic character.

MnO2:
- Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is a weakly acidic oxide and can donate one proton (H+) to water.

Mn2O7:
- Manganese heptoxide (Mn2O7) is a highly acidic oxide and can donate two protons (H+) to water.

In summary, the covalent character of MnO, MnO2, and Mn2O7 increases with the increase in oxidation state of manganese. MnO2 has higher covalent character than MnO, and Mn2O7 has the highest covalent character among the three oxides. The acidic character of these oxides increases with the increase in oxidation state of manganese, with Mn2O7 being the most acidic and MnO being basic.

Comapare covalent character of MnO, MnO2 and Mn2O7.? also compare acid...
In MnO..Mn is in +2 oxidation state.
in MnO2..Mn is in +4 o.s.
in Mn207 Mn is in +7 o.s..
order of size is ..Mn+2>Mn+4>Mn+7....by fajans rule...smaller cation show more covalent caharacter..thus order of covalent character will be..Mn2O7>MnO4>MnO...{acidic character × oxidation state} thus acidic strength order is sams like as of covalent character..
