Cryolite is an important compound used in the production of aluminium metal through the process of electrolysis. Let's understand the correct option in detail:

B) Na₃AlF₆ is used in the electrolysis of alumina for lowering the melting point of alumina.

The process of producing aluminium metal involves the electrolysis of alumina (Al₂O₃). However, the melting point of alumina is very high (around 2050°C), which makes it difficult to conduct the electrolysis process.

Cryolite (Na₃AlF₆) is added to the alumina to lower its melting point. This is because cryolite has a much lower melting point (around 1012°C) than alumina. When the mixture of alumina and cryolite is heated to a temperature of around 960-980°C, it melts and becomes a molten electrolyte.

In this molten electrolyte, the aluminium ions are positively charged and are attracted to the negatively charged cathode. At the cathode, the aluminium ions gain electrons and become aluminium metal. This process also releases oxygen gas at the anode.

Thus, cryolite plays a crucial role in the production of aluminium metal by reducing the melting point of alumina and making the electrolysis process more efficient.
