  • a)
    3 : 1
  • b)
    2 : 1

    1 : 1
  • d)
    3 : 2
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?
Most Upvoted Answer
Two electrolytic cells, one containing acidified ferrous chloride and ...
In FeCl2, Fe+2 is present

& in FeCl3, Fe+3 is present

At cathode:−Fe+2+2e−⟶Fe−(i)

                        Fe+3+3e−⟶Fe−(ii)

Equivalent weight of Fe in (i)=nAtomicweight=2Atomicweight

Equivalent weight of Fe in (ii)=3Atomicweight

∴ Ratio of iron deposited at cathodes=A/3A/2=3:2

Two electrolytic cells, one containing acidified ferrous chloride and ...
Explanation:

Electrolysis of acidified ferrous chloride (FeCl2):
- In this cell, iron (Fe2+) ions are reduced at the cathode to form solid iron.
- The half-reaction for the reduction of Fe2+ ions is: Fe2+ + 2e- → Fe(s)

Electrolysis of acidified ferric chloride (FeCl3):
- In this cell, iron (Fe3+) ions are reduced at the cathode to form solid iron.
- The half-reaction for the reduction of Fe3+ ions is: Fe3+ + 3e- → Fe(s)

Ratio of iron deposited at cathodes:
- The ratio of the number of electrons required for the reduction of Fe2+ ions to Fe3+ ions is 2:3.
- Since the cells are connected in series, the same amount of current flows through both cells.
- The amount of iron deposited at the cathodes is directly proportional to the number of electrons transferred in the reduction reaction.
- Therefore, the ratio of iron deposited at the cathodes in the two cells will be 3:2 (Fe3+ : Fe2+), corresponding to the ratio of 3:2 for the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ ions.
Therefore, the correct answer is option 'D' (3:2).
