Enzymes are biological catalysts that accelerate chemical reactions in living organisms. They are composed of a protein component called apoenzyme and a non-protein component called coenzyme or cofactor. Here, we will discuss the correct statement with reference to enzymes.

Holoenzyme = Apoenzyme + Coenzyme

The complete and active form of an enzyme is called holoenzyme. It consists of two parts- the protein component (apoenzyme) and the non-protein component (coenzyme or cofactor). The apoenzyme alone is inactive and needs the presence of a coenzyme or cofactor to become active. For example, the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) has a coenzyme called NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), which is required for its activity.

Apoenzyme

The protein component of an enzyme is called apoenzyme. It is the inactive form of an enzyme and lacks the non-protein component (coenzyme or cofactor). The apoenzyme alone cannot catalyze a reaction. For example, the apoenzyme of LDH is called LDH-A, which has no activity without the presence of NAD+.

Coenzyme

The non-protein component of an enzyme is called a coenzyme or cofactor. It is a small molecule that binds to the active site of the enzyme and participates in the catalytic reaction. Coenzymes are often derived from vitamins and are essential for the activity of many enzymes. For example, NAD+ is a coenzyme for LDH, which accepts electrons during the conversion of lactate to pyruvate.

Therefore, the correct statement with reference to enzymes is:

Holoenzyme = Apoenzyme + Coenzyme (Option A)

Which one of the following statements is correct,with reference to enz...
Basically the enzymes consist of a proteineacous and non proteinacous part/cofactor. The proteineacous part is Apoenzyme while the non proteineacous part is coenzyme. Without cofactor /coenzyme the activity of the enzyme is lost.
