Answer:

Haber Process:

The Haber process is a chemical reaction that produces ammonia from nitrogen gas and hydrogen gas. The reaction is exothermic and is typically carried out at high temperatures and pressures.

Given:

30L of dihydrogen and 30L of dinitrogen were taken for reaction which yielded only 50% of the expected product.

To find:

The composition of the gaseous mixture under the aforesaid condition in the end.

Solution:

The balanced chemical equation for the Haber process is:

N2(g) + 3H2(g) → 2NH3(g)

According to the equation, 1 mole of nitrogen reacts with 3 moles of hydrogen to produce 2 moles of ammonia.

30L of dihydrogen and 30L of dinitrogen were taken for the reaction.

Volume of 1 mole of gas at STP (Standard Temperature and Pressure) = 22.4L

Therefore, the number of moles of dihydrogen and dinitrogen taken for the reaction =

30/22.4 = 1.34 moles of H2

30/22.4 = 1.34 moles of N2

The expected yield of ammonia can be calculated based on the number of moles of dinitrogen taken:

1.34 moles of N2 × (2 moles of NH3/1 mole of N2) = 2.68 moles of NH3

However, the actual yield of ammonia is only 50% of the expected yield, which means that only 1.34 moles of NH3 were produced.

The remaining gases in the mixture can be calculated using stoichiometry:

1.34 moles of NH3 produced means that 0.67 moles of N2 and 2.01 moles of H2 were consumed.

The composition of the gaseous mixture under the aforesaid condition in the end is:

- 10 L ammonia
- 25 L nitrogen
- 15 L hydrogen

Therefore, option 4) 10 L ammonia, 25 L nitrogen, 15 L hydrogen is the correct answer.
