Identify the wrong statement with reference to transport of oxygen.
  • a)
Higher H+ conc. in alveoli favours the formation of oxyhaemoglobin
  • b)
Low pCO2 in alveoli favours the formation of oxyhaemoglobin
  • c)
Binding of oxygen with haemoglobin is mainly related to partial pressure of O2
  • d)
Partial pressure of CO2 can interfere with O2 binding with haemoglobin.
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Identify the wrong statement with reference to transport of oxygen.a)H...
The Oxygen dissociation curve is highly useful in studying the effect of factors like pCO2, H+ concentration, etc., on binding of O2 with haemoglobin. In the alveoli, where there is high pO2, low pCO2, lesser H+ concentration and lower temperature, the factors are all favourable for the formation of oxyhaemoglobin.
In the tissues, where low pO2, high pCO2, high H+ concentration and higher temperature exist, the conditions are favourable for dissociation of oxygen from the oxyhaemoglobin.

Identify the wrong statement with reference to transport of oxygen.a)H...
Explanation:

Higher H+ conc. in alveoli favours the formation of oxyhaemoglobin
- This statement is incorrect because higher H+ concentration in alveoli actually shifts the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve to the right, making it harder for hemoglobin to bind with oxygen.
- Higher H+ concentration in alveoli is a result of lower pH, which is known as the Bohr effect. This phenomenon helps in the release of oxygen from hemoglobin in tissues where it is needed.

Low pCO2 in alveoli favours the formation of oxyhaemoglobin
- This statement is correct. Low partial pressure of carbon dioxide in alveoli leads to a higher pH and favors the formation of oxyhemoglobin.

Binding of oxygen with haemoglobin is mainly related to partial pressure of O2
- This statement is correct. The binding of oxygen with hemoglobin is mainly determined by the partial pressure of oxygen in the blood.

Partial pressure of CO2 can interfere with O2 binding with haemoglobin
- This statement is correct. Partial pressure of carbon dioxide can interfere with the binding of oxygen with hemoglobin through the Bohr effect, where increased CO2 levels lead to a decrease in pH and reduced affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen.
In conclusion, the incorrect statement regarding the transport of oxygen is option 'A', which states that higher H+ concentration in alveoli favors the formation of oxyhemoglobin.
