Ribosomes in Mitochondria, Chloroplast, and Eukaryotic Cytoplasm

Mitochondria, chloroplasts, and eukaryotic cytoplasm have ribosomes that are responsible for protein synthesis. However, the ribosomes in each of these organelles differ in size and composition.

Size and Composition of Ribosomes

Ribosomes are composed of two subunits, the large and small subunits. The size of ribosomes is determined by the sedimentation coefficient or S value, which is a measure of how fast they sediment in a centrifugal field. The S value is determined by the size and shape of the ribosome, as well as the density of the ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and protein components.

Mitochondrial Ribosomes

Mitochondria have their own ribosomes that are responsible for synthesizing some of the proteins needed for oxidative phosphorylation. The ribosomes in mitochondria are smaller than those found in eukaryotic cytoplasm and are referred to as mitoribosomes. They have a sedimentation coefficient of 70S and are composed of two subunits, the small 28S subunit and the large 39S subunit.

Chloroplast Ribosomes

Chloroplasts also have their own ribosomes, which are responsible for synthesizing the proteins necessary for photosynthesis. These ribosomes are referred to as chlororibosomes and have a sedimentation coefficient of 70S. They are composed of a small 30S subunit and a large 50S subunit.

Eukaryotic Cytoplasmic Ribosomes

Eukaryotic cytoplasmic ribosomes are responsible for synthesizing the proteins necessary for a variety of cellular functions. They are larger than both mitochondrial and chloroplast ribosomes and have a sedimentation coefficient of 80S. Eukaryotic ribosomes are composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit.

Conclusion

In summary, ribosomes in mitochondria and chloroplasts are smaller than those found in eukaryotic cytoplasm and have a sedimentation coefficient of 70S. Eukaryotic cytoplasmic ribosomes are larger and have a sedimentation coefficient of 80S.
