Calculation of outlet concentration from a detention tank

    Given data:
    - Organic concentration of wastewater = 54 mg/l
    - Flow rate of wastewater = 0.8 m3/day
    - Dimensions of detention tank = 2m x 4m x 2m
    - Decay constant = 0.1 per day

    Assumptions:
    - The contents of the tank are well mixed
    - The wastewater is completely degraded in the tank

Step 1: Calculation of detention time
Detention time = Volume of tank / Flow rate of wastewater
    = (2m x 4m x 2m) / (0.8 m3/day)
    = 10 days

Step 2: Calculation of removal rate constant
Removal rate constant (k) = Decay constant (k') x Volume of tank
    = 0.1 per day x (2m x 4m x 2m)
    = 1.6 per day

Step 3: Calculation of outlet concentration
Outlet concentration = Influent concentration x e^(-k x detention time)
    = 54 mg/l x e^(-1.6 per day x 10 days)
= 17.9 to 18.1 mg/l (rounded to one decimal place)

Therefore, the outlet concentration of the wastewater from the detention tank is 17.9 to 18.1 mg/l.
