Stability of Benzene vs Cyclohexane

Benzene

  • Benzene is a cyclic hydrocarbon with the formula C6H6.

  • It has a planar structure where each carbon atom is sp2 hybridized, and the delocalized π electrons form a ring of electron density above and below the plane of the carbon atoms.

  • It is aromatic and exhibits resonance stabilization due to the delocalization of π electrons around the ring.

  • The bond length between the carbon atoms in the ring is intermediate between that of a single bond and a double bond, indicating partial double bond character.

  • Due to its aromaticity, benzene is very stable and does not undergo addition reactions easily.

Cyclohexane

  • Cyclohexane is a cyclic hydrocarbon with the formula C6H12.

  • It has a non-planar structure where each carbon atom is sp3 hybridized, and the molecule adopts a chair conformation to minimize steric strain.

  • It is non-aromatic and does not exhibit resonance stabilization.

  • The bond length between the carbon atoms in the ring is equivalent to that of a single bond.

  • Although cyclohexane is relatively stable, it is not as stable as benzene due to the absence of aromaticity and resonance stabilization.

Conclusion

In conclusion, benzene is more stable than cyclohexane due to its aromaticity and resonance stabilization. The partial double bond character in the carbon-carbon bonds in the ring and the delocalization of π electrons around the ring make benzene highly resistant to addition reactions and other types of chemical reactions.
