Calculation of Molar Mass of Myoglobin

Step 1: Calculate the mass of Fe in 100 grams of myoglobin.

Given, myoglobin contains 0.32% Fe by mass.

Therefore, the mass of Fe in 100 grams of myoglobin = 0.32 grams.

Step 2: Calculate the number of moles of Fe in 0.32 grams.

Molar mass of Fe = 55.85 g/mol.

Number of moles of Fe = mass of Fe/molar mass of Fe = 0.32/55.85 = 0.00572 mol.

Step 3: Calculate the number of moles of myoglobin corresponding to 0.00572 mol of Fe.

Since there is one Fe atom per molecule of myoglobin, the number of moles of myoglobin is also 0.00572 mol.

Step 4: Calculate the molar mass of myoglobin.

Molar mass of myoglobin = mass of myoglobin/number of moles of myoglobin = 100/0.00572 = 17470 g/mol.

Therefore, the molar mass of myoglobin is 17470 g/mol.

Explanation:

Myoglobin is a protein found in muscle that stores oxygen for metabolic processes. It contains iron (Fe) atoms that bind to oxygen. Chemical analysis shows that myoglobin contains 0.32% Fe by mass. This means that for every 100 grams of myoglobin, 0.32 grams of Fe are present.

To calculate the molar mass of myoglobin, we need to first calculate the number of moles of Fe in 100 grams of myoglobin. This can be done using the molar mass of Fe. Once we know the number of moles of Fe, we can assume that there is one Fe atom per molecule of myoglobin and calculate the number of moles of myoglobin. Finally, we can use the mass of myoglobin and the number of moles of myoglobin to calculate the molar mass of myoglobin.

In this case, the molar mass of myoglobin is 17470 g/mol.

We know that the molar mass of Fe is 56

So, 56g is 0.34% of 1 mole of myoglobin

=> 56g/0.34 is 1% of 1 mole of myoglobin

=> 56*100g/0.34 is 100% of 1 mole of myoglobin

=> 1.6 x10^4 g/mol is molar mass of myoglobin
