Given:


  • Pressure at the bottom of the tank = 3 atm (1 atm = 10^5 N/m)

  • Area of the hole = √3/2 times the cross-sectional area of the container



Formula:


  • Velocity of efflux = √(2gh)



Calculation:


  • Pressure at the bottom of the tank = 3 atm = 3 x 10^5 N/m

  • Let the height of the water column above the hole be h.

  • Pressure at the hole = Pressure due to water column + Atmospheric pressure = hρg + 1 atm = (h x 10^3 x 9.8) + 1 x 10^5 N/m

  • Pressure at the hole = 3 x 10^5 N/m

  • Equating the above two equations, we get: h = 2.55 m

  • Area of the hole = √3/2 times the cross-sectional area of the container

  • Let the cross-sectional area of the container be A.

  • Area of the hole = √3/2 x A

  • Volume of water flowing out per second = Area of the hole x Velocity of efflux

  • Volume of water flowing out per second = √3/2 x A x √(2gh)

  • Volume of water flowing out per second = √(3/4 x 2) x A x √(2 x 9.8 x 2.55)

  • Volume of water flowing out per second = 1.5 x A x 7.02

  • Velocity of efflux = Volume of water flowing out per second / Area of the hole

  • Velocity of efflux = (1.5 x A x 7.02) / √3/2 x A

  • Velocity of efflux = 3.06 m/s
